Volumetry

In architecture, volumetry refers to the study of a building’s forms, proportions, and dimensions in space. It considers how volumes interconnect, how they interact with their surroundings, and how they influence the overall perception of the project.

A key tool in spatial composition

Volumetry makes it possible to:

  • Organize space functionally,

  • Establish visual hierarchies,

  • Optimize natural light and views,

  • Give the building a strong identity.

It lies at the heart of architectural design—even before materials or technical details are considered.

Volumetry and a vertical extension project

During the vertical extension of an échoppe in Le Bouscat, we conducted a detailed volumetric study to ensure the new addition would blend naturally with the existing structure. The goal: maintain proportional balance while introducing a contemporary design language and creating additional living space.
