The role of the geometer in an architectural project

At ERHÉ Architecture, our Bordeaux office, we regularly work with geometers. Their role is essential when a construction, renovation or extension project is underway. Here, we explain their role in all architectural projects :

What is the role of a geometer in architecture ?
The geometer plays a key role in the precise measurement of land and built-up areas. They establish the exact boundaries of a plot of land, ensure that planned constructions comply with zoning and town planning regulations, and provide essential data for architectural planning and design. In short, the geometer guarantees the spatial and legal integrity of building projects, facilitating a solid basis for architectural development.

What is the relationship between the architect and the geometer ?
It is essential and complementary. The architects at ERHÉ design the project taking into account the client's needs, aesthetics and functionality, while the geometer provides the precise data on the ground, such as dimensions, gradients and legal boundaries, which are crucial to the design.
  • Planning and design : the geometer establishes the physical and legal basis of the site on which the architect will design the project. This information is fundamental to ensuring that the design fits the site perfectly.
  • Compliance with regulations : the geometer helps to check that the project complies with zoning, town planning and building regulations. This enables the architect to incorporate these constraints into the design from the earliest stages.
  • Space optimisation : the data provided by the geometer enables the architect to optimise the use of space, taking into account the unique characteristics of the land, to create designs that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
  • Problem solving : together, the architect and geometer can identify and resolve potential problems before construction begins, avoiding additional costs and delays.
  • Project monitoring : during the construction phase, the geometer can continue to play an important role by providing topographical monitoring to ensure that the work carried out corresponds to the approved plans.
In short, the architect and geometer work hand in hand to ensure that the architectural project is not only beautiful and functional, but also technically feasible and compliant with legal and regulatory requirements. At ERHÉ Architecture, we have been working with the same trusted geometers for many years, guaranteeing precision and expertise on all our projects.
